I got a new name today. One of the boys called mee Mrs. Shrek. I think he may have trying to insult or upset mee. Rather I was confused and asked him to repeat what he said. While I turned the conversation to what Shrek's wife should be called, my mind went another direction.

Although I haven't worn about a Shrek movie I will say I enjoy the story line. 1) The princes wasn't saved by a prince she had only danced with once. 2) They learned to get along and talk and so on. 3) The ever lasting beauty of true loves kiss looked nothing like the airbrushed photoshop models we are regularly bombarded with. Even the second movie maintains the separation of love and the media's ideal look.

I therefore decided I was okay being called Fiona.

I post this video as a concerned citizen. We need to keep an eye on what our government is doing. I refer to the legislative branch as well as the executive branch. Contact your elected officials at the every level. Follow what they are doing. Let them know how you feel about it.

It is my view the person who desires more government seeks to negate personal responsibility. It is time we spend more time teaching people how to fish.

Give it a try...

Working at a residnetial treatment facility has it's perks. I have access to more than one therapist for free counseling. (he,he--) However, as most teachers will tell you, we are in part counselors. This advice was shared by a fellow teacher.

In God We Still Trust

Think about it...

I have heard it said, "you are what you eat". I suggest we change it to, "You are what you think."

An EFT program I recently watched stated..."Your consistent thoughts become your reality." This presentation reminded mee of something my mission president often said:

WE DO WHAT

WE FOCUS ON!

As I was sharing these thoughts with a co-worker I remembered something I have attempted teach and practice while working with adolescents. Tell them what you want them to do. For example:

Johnny is talking, walking, and dribbling a basketball. You want him to hold the ball still. If you tell him to "stop". He may not know what you want him to stop doing. If you say, "stop dribbling the ball". The last thing he heard was "Dribbling ball". He may have not processed the "stop". Or, it may take him a longer than you want for him to come up with what else to do with the ball.

If you say, "Hold the ball still". He knows what to do, and the last thing he heard was, "ball still".

What about dieting? What do you think when you think diet? Limit food intake. Don't get to eat sweets. Don't eat, eat, eat. Not what you want to be focused on.

My co-worker introduced mee to this song...She has the little lion guy on her desk which sings the song for her. It keeps her moving...

Happy New Year!

I rang in 2009 with family some cousins and their children.

It was easier to tell the younger ones that they were good freinds rather than trying to explain that they are second cousins and what that means. In case you are wondering what the fasination with the laptop is...my little sister and her family joined us from Florida. They even played a game of UNO with us.

As every two year old should know...you cannot have a party without a cake and candles.

Where as it was a transcontinental gathering we rang in the new year in Eastern Standard Time.

An Ideal Christmas

My first year as a teacher,considering the separation of church and state, I asked what I was allowed to do for Christmas. The response I got was, "Just as long as it is not religious." What, it's CHRISTmas. What made it worse was when I commented about students "winter tree" having a star and realized she really didn't know why there was a star on the top of Christmas Trees. And I couldn't tell her.
I use to look forward to the Christmas season. It is a time of music and lights, candies and parties. I an not sure when I started to realized that all of this holiday magic was supposedly to be contained between the day after Thanksgiving and December 25th at about noon, if you were lucky.
That was something that really bothered mee. Why can't I sing my favorite hymns all year long? Some of the best feel good movies involve Christmas (i.e., Seasons of the Heart, White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life) who says they can only be watched in December? Santa Clause is a discussion for another day.
There were to many children last year who informed mee of all sorts of things I should get them for Christmas. When did Christmas become all about presents? It was about mid-October I decided I was done. What is the sense in the practice of obligatory gift giving? Either you know or don't need what you are getting. Who decided gifts must be given in order to show affection? Do we need to keep up with the Jones' in this area too?

Last year the only thing I did for Christmas was go the the Creche (you missed it, it was last weekend) and spend time with friends and family. I also had a friend over to help mee make mice. (I'm hoping to do that this weekend)
This year I am still okay without the stress of spending money I don't really have to buy things for everyone I do or should talk to at least once a week. My concern is that I should be doing something to help the world remember the real meaning of Christmas. Traditions can be used to teach and add depth to life's experiences. They can also give us something to look forward to.
So here I sit looking for what I want Christmas to be in my home and with my family. How will we mark a day or season as a celebration of a life we live all year round? I guess it is a good thing I don't have to have that figured out for this year.
